Photodermatology is the study of the biological effects of ultraviolet rays and visible light on the skin. It is a complex specialty, as it draws on knowledge of clinical dermatology, but relies on other areas such as photobiology, which studies the effects of radiant energy on living beings; photochemistry, which studies chemical reactions caused by radiation; and photoimmunology, which reviews human protection mechanisms against any harmful effects. The work is divided into three large sections: the first dedicated to photobiology, the second section describing photosensitive diseases, and a third section that addresses the different techniques of phototherapy.
