The endothelium is made up of a mosaic of contiguous cells with a hexagonal outline. This particular arrangement ensures a maximum density of cells in contact with one another, for a minimum of cell membrane perimeter. It also ensures maximum contact between the cell surface and the overlying stroma. The corneal endothelium has a synthetic function. It acts as a barrier between the stroma and the aqueous humor thanks to its intercellular junctions and its function of constant regulation of the hydration of the stroma.
