Intestinal permeability is the ability of the intestine wall to act as a selective barrier, so that, on the one hand, it facilitates the absorption of nutrients and, on the other, it blocks the passage of toxic substances, bacteria, and viruses that can harm the body. This transport of molecules and ions between two intestinal cells is regulated by proteins, and on some occasions, it is altered and allows the passage of substances and toxins into the blood, which causes a phenomenon called intestinal hyperpermeability.
