The postpartum period is a high-risk time for new mothers potentially developing anxiety and depression, as well as a variety of behavioral and interpersonal difficulties involving their babies, partners, and family. Although a range of treatments are available, including psychotherapies, psychosocial interventions, and medications, each has limitations in addressing the complex challenges posed by postpartum difficulties. Many women also face significant barriers to accessing quality mental health care during this crucial period. Recognizing the need for further development and research on psychodynamic approaches to postpartum anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties, the authors of this volume introduce postpartum problem-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PPFPP). PPFPP specifically targets the symptoms and other difficulties faced by postpartum women, including behavioral and interpersonal issues. This treatment is an adaptation of problem-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy specifically to the postpartum time period.
